What the Oeschinensee gondola costs with a Swiss Travel Pass
The operator gives the same reduction to a Swiss Travel Pass, a Half Fare Card and a GA travelcard, even though Oeschinensee doesn't appear on the official validity map. It's honoured anyway. What you actually get is a flat CHF 17.50 off each summer band, which lands close to half but never quite hits it.

Children pay those same discounted rates. The SBB Saver Day Pass gives you nothing here at all, so don't turn up expecting it to work. Tickets can be rebooked for a later date free of charge, but they can't be cancelled, so treat the booking as spent money the moment you make it.
The compulsory time slot from 20 June to 20 September 2026
Between those dates you need a time slot, and no pass includes one. There's no fee recorded for it, so it's a booking rather than a charge, but it's the single most common way people get turned away at Kandersteg. A ticket bought through SBB Mobile or Swiss Activities can be completely valid and still not carry a slot, which is a very expensive kind of correct.
- Buy your discounted ticket with the pass.
- Book the time slot separately for your date, if you're travelling 20 June to 20 September.
- Turn up at the valley station within your window, ten minutes on foot from Kandersteg station.
Guest card or Swiss Travel Pass: which one to use at the barrier
If you're staying locally you may hold both, and you can't combine them, so it's a straight choice between a bigger reduction and a simpler morning.

Guest cards from Kandersteg, Adelboden, Frutigen, Kandergrund and Reichenbach all give the 10%. Unless you're allergic to booking things, the pass wins by about CHF 13.50 a head.
The Berner Oberland Pass gives no discount here since January 2026
It used to work. It doesn't now, and the change is confirmed on three of the operator's own pages and worded as permanent, so this isn't a seasonal wobble. Walking up from Kandersteg for nothing
The lake is free. The walk up from Kandersteg is free. The only thing anyone charges for is the cabin, so with the legs and the time to spare you pay nothing at all.
It takes over an hour and climbs nearly 500 metres, which is a real walk rather than a stroll, and it costs CHF 0. Ride up and walk down and you've halved the effort for the same lake.
Getting from the top station to the lake
The gondola takes 10 to 15 minutes and runs continuously rather than to a timetable, so you board the next cabin that arrives instead of watching a clock. It doesn't drop you at the water, though.
From the top station it's another 20 to 30 minutes down to the lake on an easy road, fine with a pushchair. In summer a paid electric taxi runs between the top station and the restaurants roughly every half hour, with priority for anyone with reduced mobility.
Trains to Kandersteg from Bern, Spiez and Brig
Direct trains reach Kandersteg from Bern, Spiez and Brig, and it's at least one change from anywhere else. Reckon on about an hour from Interlaken or Bern. The valley station is a ten minute walk from the railway station, which is worth adding to your slot maths.
Swimming, boats and the Heuberg loop at Oeschinensee
The water is turquoise, it sits under the Blüemlisalp, and it is freezing even in August. Swimming is allowed and people do it, briefly and loudly.

Allow four to six hours for a decent visit, or a full day if you want a boat and a longer walk. In winter you can swim through the ice, with the operator's rules: holes at least 50m from the marked ice walk, tell the SOS patrol first, the frozen lake open only 09:00 to 16:00, and be off it before dark.
Food at the lake, not at the top station
There's a mountain restaurant on the shore itself, with a dining room, a sunny terrace, a seminar room and group menus. It's at the lake rather than at the top station, so it's 20 to 30 minutes from where the gondola leaves you. If it's pouring, that's your only indoor option up there, because nothing is recorded at the top station itself.
What the gondola won't carry and what you can't do at the lake
Four rules worth knowing before you pack.
- No bikes, scooters or paddleboards are carried at all.
- No drones.
- No camping, bivouacking or hammocks.
- Dogs are welcome at roughly CHF 5 to 8.
When the Oeschinensee gondola is open
It runs roughly 9am to 5pm, with longer hours from June to September. It shuts for about ten days in November and again from mid March to mid May, and the fare bands run 9 May to 9 November.
