What you pay for Monte Brè with the Swiss Travel Pass
The full return fare from Suvigliana to the summit is CHF 30. With the pass you hand over CHF 15. There's no reservation and no supplement. You just turn up at Suvigliana, buy the ticket at the window there, and get on.
The catch, if you can call it that, is that Monte Brè is two funiculars stacked on top of each other and only the top one costs anything. The signage does a poor job of explaining it, and at least one person has come away complaining the discount was never made clear and being refused a refund.
The Cassarate to Suvigliana funicular is free for everyone
The lower section, from Cassarate up to Suvigliana, costs nothing. Not free with the pass, free full stop, for anyone who walks up to it. It's automatic, runs every 15 minutes from 07:00 to 21:00 and later in summer, carries 30 people and takes under four minutes. The line dates from 1908, which the exhibits at the top station will tell you about if you're the sort who reads them.
So your CHF 15 buys you the Suvigliana to summit leg only, which runs every 30 minutes from 09:00 to 17:00 and takes 10 minutes. Total travel time from the bottom is about 14 minutes plus whatever you spend waiting for the connection. Time it badly and the wait is longer than the ride.
Getting to the Monte Brè funicular from Lugano station
- Get to Lugano. From Zurich it's about three hours by train.
- Take bus 2 from outside Lugano station to Cassarate, roughly 10 minutes. If it's a nice evening, the walk is about 30 minutes.
- Ride the free funicular up to Suvigliana.
- Buy your CHF 15 ticket at the Suvigliana window and show your pass.
Groups should email ahead. Everyone else can ignore the booking question entirely.
The view from 925m: Lugano, the lake and the far peaks
Lugano sits directly below you, with the lake around it and snow-capped peaks along the horizon on a clear day. It's a 925m summit, so this isn't high alpine terrain, it's a balcony over a town.
The top station has four things on it besides the view.
- Maria Assunta, a small church. Several people have turned up to find it locked.
- A playground.
- A boutique.
- The funicular history exhibits.
Walking from the summit to Brè village and down to Gandria
Two walks are worth your time and they're completely different in scale.
- Brè village, 15 minutes on foot. A small place scattered with open-air sculptures.
- Down to Gandria on the lakeshore. A proper descent that ends at a village on the water, where you catch the boat back to Lugano. The boat is covered by your Swiss Travel Pass.
The operator sells a one-way ticket built around that second option: funicular up, walk down, boat home. If you're going to walk, buy the one-way rather than the return, because a return ticket you only half use is money left on the mountain.
Eating at the top of Monte Brè: manage your expectations
Four places to eat, and the warmest thing anyone says about them is about the lasagna.
- Osteria Funicolare, at the summit.
- Ristorante Vetta, also at the summit.
- A snack bar.
- A cafe with a panoramic terrace, a few minutes downhill through the trees.
Reviewers keep using the word lacklustre. Someone did rate the lasagna highly. Someone else arrived in late November and found both restaurants shut.
Treat lunch up here as a bonus rather than the plan. If the weather turns and you're counting on an indoor option, know that the restaurants, snack bar, church and station exhibits are the entire list, and out of season several of them may be closed.
Wheelchair access on Monte Brè
The upper funicular is wheelchair accessible, with two lifts, and a companion travels free. The lower section from Cassarate is not accessible. Phone two hours ahead and there's a free shuttle up to Suvigliana so you can join at the point where the accessible section starts.
When Monte Brè is open and when it isn't
It runs nearly year round. It closes on 25 December 2026 and there's a maintenance break in early 2027. The stretch worth aiming for is early April to late October.
