First ascent is 09:00 to 09:10. Most people stay one to two hours at the top, which is about right unless you're eating. Zurich to Interlaken Ost is roughly two hours, so this is genuinely doable as a day trip from the other end of the country.
The last funicular down is 21:40 in summer, which makes sunset the point
In summer the last descent is 21:40, dropping to around 21:10 in spring and early autumn, and as early as 18:10 in late autumn, so check before you commit to an evening.
From about 60 minutes before sunset the Jungfrau group goes gold and Interlaken starts lighting up directly below you. The last funicular also caps how many people can be up there, so sunset here doesn't get overrun the way you'd expect. Miss that last car and you're walking down in the dark, which is two to three hours you didn't plan for.

The Eiger, Moench and Jungfrau sit straight ahead, which is the shot everyone comes for. Lake Thun is to your right, Lake Brienz to your left, and that's where the Two Lakes Bridge gets its name. The Schynige Platte is visible too, and Interlaken is directly below.
Things to do at Harder Kulm besides look at the view
It's a compact summit, so none of this takes long, but there's more than a railing and a signpost.

- The Panorama Restaurant, built to look like a fairytale castle.
- A playground near the summit, opened in 2024.
- A picnic area.
- A cow statue that everyone poses with.
There's no animal enclosure, so if you've got children expecting marmots or goats, set expectations on the way up.
Eating at the Panorama Restaurant, and why the valley station has nothing
The Panorama Restaurant does Swiss classics: lake trout from Brienz, roesti, evening fondue, plus soups, sandwiches and cakes. Prices are reasonable by Swiss mountain standards, which is a real compliment. The glass-fronted dining room sits on the cliff edge with window tables framing the panorama, and there are three event rooms if you're travelling with a group. Book a table if you want evening fondue; you don't need a reservation for the funicular itself.
The valley station has no toilets, no lockers and no kiosk. Use Interlaken Ost for all three before you cross the river.
Walking up from Interlaken takes two to three hours
Signposted paths at the top link the station, the viewpoint and the restaurant, so nothing up there needs a map. Longer hikes from the summit are for experienced walkers rather than a casual afternoon. Walking up from Interlaken instead of riding is two to three hours, and riding up to walk down is a common way to do it.
Going at 09:00 or going for sunset, and why the middle is the worst
